Why New Orleans changes the answer

The common local mistake is choosing flat for a bedroom because it looks soft in a showroom, then finding it cannot be cleaned when a humid summer leaves marks. Ceilings, and the one place the rule reverses
Ceilings in dry rooms take flat paint, and should. Flat hides the imperfections that raking light exposes across a large uninterrupted plane, and those ceilings rarely need washing. Use a product formulated as ceiling paint rather than wall paint in a flat sheen; it is engineered to resist spatter and to hold a wet edge overhead.
Bathrooms and laundry rooms reverse this. A bathroom ceiling is the coldest surface in the room and takes the most condensation in the house, so flat paint there absorbs water and grows mildew faster than the walls below it do. Those ceilings take the same satin or semi-gloss mould-resistant product as the walls. The finish is slightly less forgiving of a rough ceiling, which is a fair trade for a surface that stops going black every summer.
Mildew resistance, and what it does not do
Mildew-resistant paints carry additives that inhibit mould growth on the paint film. In a climate averaging 76 percent humidity, that is a functional requirement rather than a marketing line.

What these products do is prevent mould from colonising the surface. What they cannot do is stop moisture entering the wall. Kitchens

Grease and steam both need a washable surface, and satin holds up to repeated wiping without showing the burnish marks that flat develops.
Bedrooms and living rooms
Eggshell in a premium acrylic. Comfortable to look at, cleanable enough for real life, and sufficiently closed to cope with the ambient humidity of a conditioned room.
Hallways and stairwells
Satin. These take the most contact of any surface in a house, from hands, luggage and furniture moving through.
Trim, doors and windows
Semi-gloss or gloss enamel. Trim needs a hard finish that resists knocks and cleans easily, and the sheen contrast against eggshell walls is what makes trim read as trim.
Primer is not optional on old plaster
Product choice and quantity move together, and how much paint a 1,000 sq ft interior needs shows how coverage rates change the gallon count.
A great deal of local housing stock predates drywall. Original lath and plaster, and any area that has been patched, absorbs unevenly. Applying premium topcoat directly onto unsealed plaster spends expensive paint on absorption and produces a blotchy finish that needs a third coat to even out.
Prime in these situations:
- Bare plaster or new drywall
- Patched or skim-coated areas
- Water stains, which need a stain-blocking primer specifically
- Bare or previously varnished wood
- A dramatic colour change, particularly dark to light
Paint-and-primer-in-one products are genuine improvements on ordinary paint, but they are not a substitute for a dedicated primer on a bare or stained surface. Read the claim carefully: it usually describes performance over a sound, previously painted wall.
How long an interior job should last here

Wash before you paint. Surfaces in a humid city carry a film that is not obvious to the eye. Paint applied over it bonds to the film rather than the wall.
Treat existing mildew rather than covering it. Mildew painted over grows through. It needs cleaning off and the surface needs to dry fully before anything goes on.
Let patched areas cure. Joint compound and plaster patches hold moisture, and in humid air they take longer to dry than the label suggests. Painting a damp patch traps that water under the film.
Watch the recoat window. A paint rated for four hours between coats can need six or more on a humid morning. Applying the second coat early produces a film that stays soft and marks easily.

Odour-eliminating and air-purifying claims. Interesting, unproven at the scale of a room, and never a reason to choose one product over another that performs better on moisture.
